Abstract
750,443. Vices. HARDEN TOOL & GAUGE CO., Ltd. Oct. 18, 1954 [Oct. 16, 1953], No. 28577/53. Class 61 [Also in Group XXIX] The movable jaw 9 of a vice is moved by a lead screw 11 and nut 15 one of which is moved angularly by a double acting fluid operated means at least sufficiently for gripping and releasing work between the jaws. The machine vice shown comprises a body 8, fixed jaw-7, and a head 10 slidably mounted on the body and carrying the jaw 9. A handle may be mounted on the squared end 11 of the lead screw for initial setting of the jaw 9 and the screw is then locked by tightening a nut 14. The nut 15 is mounted in bearing housings 16, 17, of the main body and is formed integral with a pinion 18 which is engaged by a rack 21 formed on a piston rod 22. The lower end of rod 22 carries a plunger 26 working in a cylinder 23 having ports 30, 31 for the supply and release of compressed air. By this arrangement the movements of the piston serve to actuate the movable jaw 9. A control unit 32 contains valve mechanism (see Group XXIX) for controlling the supply of air to the cylinder 23.
