A vice having a jaw M 1 , Figs. 1 and 2, movable by a screw V comprises an hydraulic device H mounted on a rod 2 passing through the screw and rotatable by a crank handle 1 from either end to drive both the screw and the hydraulic device to close or open the vice. Rotation of the rod 2 drives the screw V through a ratchet 3 until the work is gripped. The ratchet then slips and a screw-threaded part 4 of the rod 2 rotates in the screw V, causing movement of a piston 16 and an increased clamping pressure on the work. In a modification, the screw V, Fig. 3, engages a floating nut A engaged by springs R adjusted by a nut B.
