Abstract
1397390 Vices P TOWNSEND 3 Oct 1973 [23 Oct 1972] 46118/73 Heading B3B A clamping device, e.g. a vice, comprises a pair of relatively movable jaws 10, 11 and a screw 12 or lever to effect said relative movement, a first resilient member 14 to bias the movable jaw 11 away from the fixed jaw 10, and a biasing mechanism 15 including a second resilient member 16 to bias the movable jaw 11 towards the fixed jaw 10, the second resilient member being arranged to exert a greater biasing influence on the movable jaw than the first resilient member 14, and the biasing mechanism being arranged for selectively rendering the second resilient member 16 inoperative. The second resilient member, e.g. a spring 16 is rendered inoperative by mounting it in a cup 17 around the screw 12 and screwing up a cap 18 to compress the spring 16. The spring 16 allows a workpiece or workpieces 22, 23 to be gripped lightly whilst being adjusted before a full clamping pressure is applied.
