A reciprocating gripper 1 is connected at 3 to a lathe spindle 4 and comprises a fixed housing 15, 16, a member 2 rotatable with the spindle, a double-acting fluid-actuated hollow piston 6 forming cylinders 7, 8, a single-acting fluid-actuated piston 9 forming a cylinder 10, and a resilient collet 12 actuated by piston 9 to grip a release bar 40. In operation to feed bar 40 through the lathe spindle into a chuck 39, a valve 25 is actuated and fluid passes along pipe 29, to release the chuck and simultaneously operates a pilot control 31 to allow fluid to pass from pipe 34 through valve 33, pipe 35 to cylinders 7 and 10. Piston 9 is moved to the left and collet 12 grips bar 40. Piston 6 is moved to the right until bar 40 engages a stop 41, valve 25 is actuated to allow fluid to pass along pipe 30 and chuck 39 grips the bar. Pilot control 32 is actuated and fluid passes from pipe 34 through valve 33 and pipe 36 to cylinder 8, piston 6 is moved to the left, and collet 12 releases the bar.
