1463673 Indexing apparatus WICKMAN LANG Ltd 22 Oct 1974 [28 July 1973] 36041/73 Headings B3B and B3T Indexing apparatus for use in orientating a workpiece in a chuck 1 of a machine tool prior to a predetermined machining operation comprises a member 3 such as a chuck jaw which is indexable through at least two positions by a fluid actuated piston 6 in a cylinder 7, a distributer valve 11 movable simultaneously with indexable member 3 (jaw) and in fluid communication with the piston and cylinder in one position of the piston whereby actuation thereof causes one of a plurality of fluid pressure signals to be transmitted by the distributer valve, said signal being indicative of the position of the member 3. The piston is provided with bore 8 which houses a biased rod 9 which in one position of the piston closes the fluid communication passage 10 between the cylinder 7 and the distributer valve 11, the movement of the piston 6 thus controlling the fluid pressure flow to the valve, 11 which in turn controls the fluid pressure flow through conduits 12, 13 and 14 selectively to microswitches 26 and which are indicative of the position of the jaw member 3 as defined by the signals transmitted by the distributer valve. The indexing of the member 3 causes indexing of the workpiece held between the jaw member 3 and the freely pivotable jaw 4, the jaws gripping the workpiece under the operation of a draw bar mechanism. The indexing of the workpiece in the jaws 3 and 4 may also be effected in conjunction with indexing of the turret in a turret lathe.
