Abstract

848,523. Copy turning. MYFORD ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. March 5, 1959 [March 8, 1958], No. 7516/58. Class 83(3). A lathe copying attachment comprises a plate 1, Fig. 1, attached to the machine slide 2, a tool slide 3 mounted movably thereon, and an hydraulic cylinder block 8 secured to the slide 3, with a piston 6 slidable therein and secured to the plate 1 by a rod 5. Ports 10, 11, Fig. 4, in the cylinder are connecte d to a valve chamber 14 in the block 8 by passages 12, 27, and 13, 28, respectively. A disc valve 15, Fig. 5, having apertures 20, 21, for connecting the ports 10, 11, to the passages 12, 27, and 13, 38, is rotatably mounted on a hollow pillar 16, which is connected to an oil pressure supply 17, and has apertures 18, 19, which connect with the apertures 20, 21, in the valve. A third aperture 29 in valve 15 communicates with an exhaust passage 30. The valve 15 is actuated by a stylus 32, against a spring plunger 33. In operation, the stylus 32 is held against a template 34, Fig. 5, by a spring plunger 33, and if the stylus is moved to the right by the template, during axial traverse of the saddle 2, the disc valve 15 is rotated counter-clockwise by a pin 35 on the stylus, and communication is made between the aperture 21 and the ports 24, 26, thus allowing oil to flow through passages 13, 28, to port 11 to move cylinder block 8 and the tool slide 3 to the right, the port 10 being connected to exhaust by passages 12, 25, 27, and 29. If movement of the stylus ceases, the valve is returned to its original position by the movement of the block 8. When the stylus moves to the left, the disc valve is rotated by the plunger 33, and the port 10 is supplied with oil under pressure, thus moving the tool slide 3 to the left. Due to the oil being supplied to both sides of the valve 15, side thrust on the valve is reduced.
