Abstract

643,833. Vices. CHURCHILL & CO., Ltd., C., and MOULD, C. H. Sept. 21, 1948, No. 24677. [Class 61(ii)] In a quick release machine or bench vice in which the movable jaw comprises two relatively slidable parts, viz: a forward part forced towards the fixed jaw by toggle mechanism and a rear part having means for releasably locking the jaw on the base of the vice, the toggle and locking mechanism are operated by common means whereby the grip on the work-piece and the forces locking the jaw on its runway are simultaneously increased. The forward part 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> and rear part 7 of the movable jaw are held together by spring loaded bolts 9. A cam 14 slidably mounted between the parts 4<SP>1</SP>, 7 is connected by a link 26 and a clevis 24 to a handle lever 25. The forward and rear parts of the jaw are separated by advancing the cam against two pressure rollers 13 thereby pressing them laterally outwards between two pairs of rollers 10, 12 housed in the parts 7, 4<SP>1</SP> respectively. Between the upper ends of swivelling levers 18 eccentrically mounted on the locking shaft 15 is pivoted a trunnion 22 in which the lever 25 and clevis 24 are adjustably mounted. The flattened ends 16 of the shaft 15 are either serrated or made of soft metal and engage with serrated steps on runways in the side members 1 of the base to lock the part 7 thereto. The latter is unlocked by raising the lever 25 to a vertical position which causes a flat on the trunnion 22 to engage a pin 29 on one of the clamping levers 18. The part 7 remains locked when the lever 25 is raised to a position radial to the swivel axis of the levers 18: in this position of the lever, the cam 14 is released from the pressure rollers 13. Feet 30 may be secured to the base by bolts or screws and when not required may be secured to. the side members of the vice. Holes 31 may be provided in the fixed jaw for securing thereto jig plates and the like. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 614,905.
