Abstract

730,728. Vices. MARBAIX, Ltd., G. E. Sept. 16, 1953 [Nov. 8, 1952], No. 28196/52. Class 61. In a self-centring clamp, the oppositely moving jaws are operated by fluid - pressure applied to a cylinder and piston device, the cylinder 30 being movable with one jaw 7 and the piston-rod 27 movable with the opposed jaw 6 and independent mechanical means are provided to ensure simultaneous movement in opposite directions of the cylinder and piston-rod each with its associated clamping jaw. The jaws 6, 7 are detachably mounted on jaw carriers 10, 11 which are slidable in guides on a bottom guide plate 3 mounted on a hollow base member 1. The means for effecting simultaneous movement of the jaws in opposite directions comprises a double armed lever 43 centrally pivoted on a vertical pin 42 supported at its upper end in the plate 3 and at its lower end in the base 1. Pivoted links 44 connect the ends of the lever to the jaw holders 10, 11. The jaw 6 has a forwardly projecting part which interengages between two projecting parts of the jaw 7, both jaws having V-shaped recesses or recesses shaped to clamp hexagon bars. Fluid is supplied to either side of the double acting piston 36, pressure fluid supplied to the left of the piston tending to move the piston to the right and the cylinder 30 to the left and causing engagement of the jaws with the work. To disengage the jaws pressure fluid is supplied to the right of the piston. The Provisional Specification describes also a construction in which the twoarmed lever is replaced by a duplex cam.
