Abstract

An actuator for a workpiece gripper (not shown, e.g. toggle-operated) for feeding articles to, or removing them from, a stamping press comprises a travel cylinder assembly 10 including a piston-rod 24 to which is connected an actuator cylinder assembly 12 having a pistonrod 54 connected to the gripper, and a pair of hollow guide-rods 36, 38 parallel to piston-rod 24 and secured to the assembly 12, the guiderods being guided in the assembly 10 and serving as conduits through which pressure fluid is supplied to the assembly 12. The actuator is suspended from a hollow rod (30), Fig. 3 (not shown), mounted between opposite ends of the assembly 10 and also used as a conduit for supplying assembly 10. A swinging arm (not shown) may carry the rod (30) in a universal joint. Valves (66, 72), Fig. 1 (not shown), may be operated by solenoids and a cam-operated timer switch for controlling the cylinders. Hydraulic fluid supplied, along line 62, to the right-hand end of travel cylinder 18 moves the gripper and actuator assembly 12 to the right. The gripper may then be operated, e.g. to grip a stamping, by operation of actuator piston 52, after which the gripper is retracted and then opened.
