PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO HEER, OF DSSELDORF, GERMANY.
HYDRAULIC DRAWfeENoH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.` 781,202, dated January S1, 1905.v Application tiled October 8, 1903. *Serial No. 176,301.
To (LZZ whom it may concer-71,.-
Beit known that I, OTTO HEER, engineer, al
i citizen of the' Swiss Confederation, residing at No. 45 Graf Adolf strasse, in the city of Dsseldorf, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Draw-Benches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is a hydraulic wire-drawing frame of a special construction -whose power expended can be adapted in arrangement that several driving-cylindersA working simultaneously or separately and independently can effect the drawing.
On the drawings this drawing -frameis .shown in Figure l in a longitudinal section 1 gether.
on the line o fu of Fig. 3; in Fig. 2 in a longitudinal section on the line w w of Fig. 3.
-Fig. 3 is a plan or top view; Fig. 4, a crosslsection on the line a; w; Fig. 5, a cross-section on the line y y, the side cylinders working separately; Fig. 6, a cross-section on line z z, `showing the three cylinders working to- Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
The apparatus is constructed with three driving-cylinders a Z c, not connected with each other, lixed alongside each other on the same level, parallel, and in a horizontal position. Of the rams' Z e f of these cylinders only the outside ones, cZf, are provided von their outer or front ends with slide-blocks g Zt, which travel along slides 'Z Z4 in a line with the axis of their driving-cylinder. The ram e of' the middle cylinder Z (which is preferably of a larger diameter than the others) is provided with no special guide. The outer end of the ram e of the middle cylinder?) is of a conical shape corresponding with a conical Abore in the cross-head Z, intended to receive this end. This cross-head is of the same width as the slide-blocks of the side plungers. Its two ends are bifurcated, and the two prongs of this fork catch over the head-pieces g in the center of the upper surface of the slid( the prongs, a iilrm union is eifected between the cross-head Z and the two slide-blocks g Z1..
Each of the three cylinders is provided with a suitable valve ,arrangement t, by means of which the interior can be put in communication with the supply-pipe u of the high-pressurewater or the outlet-pipe a or shut off fromeither. For work which does not require alarge amount of power each of the two side cylinders is used separately, the dies p required being preferably afXed to the front flange of the cylinders and the internal dies p', required for drawing piping and the like, aiiiked to the back 'of the cylinders. The forward movement of the-materials which are being drawn and. whichv are secured to the headsy g Zt' ofthe slide-blocks g /t by means of clamps s is caused by the rams Z f, which are subjected to the force of the high-pressure water entering the cylinders, while the return motion of all the parts is effected on either side by means of a weight r, which is raised by means of the loose pulley g of a pulleyblock, when the respective slide-block moves v `forward and sinks down on the pressure-wa-y ter being let off. If the power of one of the outside cylinders is insuliicient for a given piece of work, the two are combined by means of the cross-head Z, clamps s being withdrawn and bolts m a inserted instead, and the piece of work is secured to a clamp forming the head'of the bolt 0, secured to the cross-head Z. The central ram is not moved in this case. Itis only brought into action should the power 'of the outside cylinders be insulicientfor the may be used, and thus a more complex combination regarding the adaptation to the power expended each time be attained.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
l. ln combination with three parallel fluidactuated cylinders and their plungers, a crosshead adapted to be engaged by the middle plunger, devices interposed between the two outer plungers and the said cross-head in order that the said plungers and cross-head may move together and means moving with the said cross-head for holding the rods or tubes to be operated on, the said parts permitting the two outer plungers to work either With or Without the middle plungei` substantially as set forth.
2. A pair of fluid-actuated cylinders and their plungers, adapted to Work together, in combination with devices actuated by said plungers, a third fluid-actuated cylinder, its plunger and means actuated at will by the latter and connecting said devices in order that the three may cooperate, and said means adapted to carry a clamp for the article to be operated on, substantially asset forth.
3. A pair of Huid-actuated cylinders and their plungers, in combination with sliding blocks adapted to be engaged by the said plungers, means connecting the said blocks to each other in order that they may work together, a third Huid-operated cylinder and its plunger, the latter plunger engaging and actuating at will said connecting means in order that the three may cooperate substantially as set forth.
4. Three parallel fluid-actuated cylinders and their plungers, devices engaged by the outer plungers, in combination with means for connecting said devices, said means being also adapted to be engaged by the middle one at will, and automatic means for replacing each of the outer plungers, the outer plungers being adapted to act independently of the middle one when the latter is not thus engaged and the middle plunger being adapted to act alone substantially as set forth.
5. Three parallel Huid-actuated cylinders and their plungers, in combination with a pair of guides, apair of slide-blocks moving in said guides and adapted to be engaged by the two outer plungers and a cross-head connected to the said blocks and adapted to be engaged by the middle plunger, the cross-head being separable at will from the middle plunger or the said pair of blocks, substantially as set forth.
6. Three parallel fluid-actuated cylinders and their plungers, in combination with sliding blocks adapted to engage the two outer plungers, weights connected to the said blocks for withdrawing the same automatically, a pair of fixed guides for said blocks, a cross-head connected to the said blocks and adapted to be engaged by the said middle plunger and rod-holding means adapted to be applied to the said cross-head at will substantially as set forth.
7. Three reciprocating plungers, in combination with blocks engaged by and moving with the two outer plungers, a cross -head adapted to be engaged bythe middle plunger and also by said blocks, and rod-holding means constructed to be attached to said cross-head, the construction and combination of the said parts permitting the middle plunger to be used alone, or the two outer plungers to be used without it or all three of the plungers to be used together substantially as set forth.
