Abstract

638,944. Vices. WELBURY, S. G. Jan. 29, 1948, No. 2700. [Class 61 (ii)] A machine vice comprises a rotatable inner jaw mounted on a swivel pin by means of which the jaw is slidably accommodated in the base of the vice, and a laterally slidable outer jaw which may also pivot about a set-screw so that the jaw faces may be parallel or at an angle one to another where they are both in positions not at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of the base. A swivel pin 13 whose headed end may enter an enlarged part 15 to engage and slide in an inverted T-shaped recess 11 formed in a base 10 is screwed into a part-cylindrical inner jaw 14. The latter is slidable on the upper face of the base 10 and is rotatable with the pin 13. A clamping spindle 16 is mounted on a lug 17 to coact with either the rounded or straight face of the jaw 14. Lugs 19 depending from the lower opposing sides of an outer jaw 18 fit into corresponding grooves 20 in the base 10 and allow the jaw 18 to slide laterally when a setscrew 21 extending through a slot 22 in the jaw 18 and screwed into a hole 23 in the base 10 is removed. When the set-screw is placed in one of the two end holes 24 formed in the base 10 and the lugs 19 are removed from engagement wjth the grooves 20, the jaw 18 can be fixed at any angle other than a right angle to the longitudinal axis of the base. The upper faces of the jaws 14, 18 are provided with holes 25 for the reception of pegs to grip thin work-pieces.
