Abstract

717,592. Vices; clamps. GOODWILL, J. H. Nov. 12, 1951, No. 26462/51. Class 61 In a screw vice having jaws 4, 5 movable relatively to the base plate 1 about three mutually perpendicular axes, a body member 2 is pivoted to the base about a vertical axis, a head member 3 is pivoted to the body 2 about a horizontal axis and a tubular member 31 carrying the jaws is pivotally mounted in the head about a horizontal axis at right angles to the first horizontal axis, the member 31 being longitudinally movable in the head. Independent means for clamping the jaws in angularly adjusted position relative to the head, the head relative to the body and the body relative to the base are provided. A circular part of the body 2 having a central opening 15 is rotatably mounted on the base 1 by means of a clamping plate 9 which fits a recess in the base. A screw 17 having a capstan type head recessed on its underside to engage with a land 16 provided about the opening 15 is passed into a tapped boss on the plate 9. A downwardly extending part 20 of the head 3 and a complementary neck 18 on the body 2 have registering axial bores 19, 21 wherein an internally threaded sleeve 24 is held against axial movement by a pin 26, capstan headed clamping screws 27, 29 being threaded in the ends of the sleeve. The tubular member 31 is mounted in a horizontal bore in the head 3 at right angles to the bore 21, and is clamped by tightening the screw 27 until its head presses against the outside of the slotted part 20. The head 3 is clamped to the body 2 by tightening the screw 29 until its head engages a tapered seating 30 keyed to the end of the sleeve 24. The jaw assembly, which may be removed from the head and used independently as a clamp, comprises the jaw 4 integral with the tubular member 31 and the movable jaw 5 having secured thereto by screws 36 a vice nut 34 provided with a rectangular base which is slidable in a longitudinal slot in the tubular member. Prior to the vice screw 35 being engaged in the nut 34, asleeve 41, helical spring 46 and washers 42, 45 are mounted on the end of the screw and positioned by an abutment pin 44. The sleeve 41 is a push fit in the enlarged end pf the bore of the tubular member 31. The jaw assembly is held against longitudinal movement by a screw 48 which engages a tapped hole in the head and,a a circumferential groove 49 in the member 31. To locate the-jaws in either horizontal or vertical positions a spring loaded detent.is provided in the head and one or more longitudinal slots in the surface of the member 31. Detachable jaw covers 38, 39 are held in position by spring means. A tommy bar 50 slidable in a diametrical bore in the head of the vice screw is releasably held in position by a spring detent fitted in an opening tangential to the bore.
