Abstract
800,950. Vices. RAWDON ENGINEERING & TOOL CO., Ltd., and HINDLE, A. Nov. 18, 1954 [Oct 15, 1953], No. 28430/53. Class 61. A machine vice comprises a body 1 which supports a slidable jaw holder 3 housed between laterally spaced, plane, top surfaces 4 of the body and actuated by a screw 15, a fixed jaw 7 and slidable jaw 8 which bridge the gap between the surfaces 4 being secured through their lower regions only to the surfaces 4 and to the jaw holder 3 respectively. The body 1 is of square prismatic shape and can be mounted on its base or on either side, grooves 20 being engagable by clamps. The body 1 may be mounted on a swivelling base. The jaw holder 3 slides in grooves 2 on the inner vertical sides of the central channel in the body 1, the top face of the jaw holder 3 being flush with the top of the body. Sets of transverse tenon grooves 5, 6 provided respectively in the top of the body and the top of the jaw support, allow the fixed jaw 7 and movable jaw 8 to be secured in more than one position on the body and jaw support. The jaws are secured by cap screws 9 recessed in the jaws and engaging tapped holes in the vice body and jaw holder. In a modification in which the slidable jaw is capable of angular movement the jaw is mounted on the jaw holder by means of a curved dovetail strip secured to the jaw holder and engaging a channel in the undersurface to the jaw. In another modification Figs. 5-8 the gripping faces are provided with " hold downs " 34, 35 inserted into transverse slots 32, 33 and held in place by spring loaded plungers 36, 37. Gripping faces are provided on both the front and rear of the jaws: In another modification the jaws have gripping faces constituted by slidable plungers.
