Description

Sept 27, 1932- R. H. BROCKMAN 1,879,058
HAND VI SE Filed June 9, 1951 Mya Patented Sept. 27, 1932 ROBERT H. IBROCKMAN, 0F ST, PETERSBURG, FLORIDA i HAND VISE Application filed .Tune 9,
This invention relates to a hand vise for holding small articles and has for its object to provide a device, of thelind referred to,-
lwhich is simple in construction and convenient and effective in use.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved vise, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Y
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a handle and 13 a plate having a part or shank extending into and xed to said handle the outer end portion 133- of said plate serving as a fixed or stationary jaw of the vise. At tached to the opposite sides ofthe plate 13, by rivets o r otherwise, are small plates 14 serving as supports for a pin 15 on which is fulcrummed a lever 16 the forward end 16a of which serves as a movable jaw of the vise. The lever 16 is provided at its rear end with an internally threaded socket part 17 in which lits a screw 18 having a head or thumb piece 19. Interposed between the socket part 17 and the fixed plate 13 is a coil spring 20, encircling the lower part of the screw'18, said plate being provided with a notch in which said spring is seated.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the spring 20, pressing upward on the socket part 17 of the lever 16, will normally close the movable jaw 16a1 against the fixed jaw 13a. Holding the vise by the handle 12 the user can open the jaws, to grasp some article, by pressure of the thumb on the head or thumb piece 19; the jaws being automatically closed, when such pressure is released, by the spring 20. The article then 1931. Serial No. 543,199.
spring 20, encircling the screw 18, vis preferred for simplicity and compactness.
Having thus described my invention I claim and vdesire to secure by Letters Patent A hand vise comprising a handle, va plate fixed to said handle and having a jaw part at its forward end and having also plates Y fixed to its opposite sides between said hanu dle and said jaw part, a lever pivotally mounted on said last-named plates and also having a jaw part at its forward end and ay threaded socket part at its rear end, a spring interposed between the rear part of said lever and said first-named plate and by which the jaws of said vise will be normally closed, and a screw fitting said socket and arranged. to engage said rst-named plate and by which the jaws of the vise may be firmly locked, said screw having a head or thumb piece for convenient pressure to open the jaws when not locked. Y
In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
` ROBERT H. BROCKMAN.
lightly held by the spring-closed jaw may Y now be rmly locked in the jaws of the vise by turning down the screw 18 against the bottom ofthe notch in the plate 13; and thus any article held in the vise may be safely and conveniently handled or manipulated asmay be desired.
It will therefore be understood that the invention provides a very simple and eective hand vise which may be used for many purposes. Instead of the coil spring, arranged as shown, any other suitable spring, pressing upward on the rear part of the lever 16, may be employed;V although the coil ioo
