Abstract

258,937. Lake, A. E., and Cook, A. June 30, 1925. Jacks. -A ratchet jack has the rack mounted on a parallel motion linkage separately pivoted from the hand-lever and carrying the crutch. The frame is constructed of substantially triangular plates 10 connected together by bolts 15 and a foot 13, wheels 14 being provided at one or both ends of the body. The crutch 21 carries an adjustable load engaging pillar 24 and is pivoted to the ends of links 16 of unequal length which are mounted on pivots 18 in the body and carry a curved rack 31. The hand-lever 38 is mounted on a pivot 39 in the body and carries a lifting pawl 43 adapted to engage with the rack with which also engages a load sustaining pawl 35. The pawls are provided with projections 37, 44, with which one arm of a pivoted two-armed lever 45 is adapted to engage. The rocking lever is operated by a cranked lever 47 carrying a spring-pressed stud 49 adapted to engage a notch 52 in the lever 45. The strength of the spring controlling the stud 49 is such that the pressure of the stud on the lever 45 is sufficient to disengage either pawl from the rack when such pawl is not under load. The pawls are manipulated by the operation of the hand-lever 38 and the cranked lever 47 to lower the load.
