Jacks.-A rack-and-pinion jack specially adapted for raising the rails of a railway track and having two geared shafts for light and heavy loads has a pedal-operated ratchet pawl device for facilitating quick lowering of the load. The load-engaging foot h is carried by a rack g which can be raised quickly by the rotation of a shaft d having a pinion f engaging with the rack. The rack can be raised slowly by the rotation of a second shaft d<1> connected by reducing gearing v to the shaft d. The shaft d' carries a ratchet wheel i<1> normally engaged by a detent pawl r<1>. A pedal lever n pivoted to the casing can be depressed to disengage the pawl from the ratchet wheel to allow a quick lowering of the load and removal of the jack, a handle c being provided for this purpose. Quick engagement of the jack with the load can be obtained by inserting a hook, which may be provided on the operating handle, through an opening s in the top of the casing and engaging an aperture t in the top of the rack.
