Abstract

242,139. Barrett, H. R., and Lake & Elliot, Ltd. March 2, 1925. Jacks. - A lifting-jack of the kind having a variable fulcrum giving a high lift has a central extension in the form of pivoted legs adapted to support the load while the second fulcrum is brought into operation. The crutch 10 is connected by a parallel motion linkage 11 to a sleeve 4 slidably mounted on a pillar 2 on the base 1, the lower members 8 of the linkage being mounted on a pivot 6 in the sleeve and being formed as extensions of the operating lever 7. The sleeve carries a weighted pawl 21 adapted to engage teeth 22 on the pillar and the pivot 9 of the linkage carries a pawl 19 controlled by a lever 25 and adapted to engage teeth 5 on the sleeve. The pivot 9 also carries a pair of supporting legs 34 controlled by a lever 32. In operation, the lever 7 is moved downwards until the pawl 19 engages the top ratchet tooth 5. The trigger 36 is then released to free the catch 37 from the sleeve 31, pivoted to the lever 32, which operates the supporting legs 34, so that the legs swing down into the vertical position and rest in recesses 39, Fig. 5, in the base so as to support the load when the pawl 19 is released from the tooth 5 by manipulating t'he handle and trigger device 26. The lever 7 now fulcrums on the pivot 9 and is raised until the pawl 21 on the sleeve 4 engages one of the teeth 22 on the pillar as shown in Fig. 5. The handle now fulcrums. on the pivot 6 and a further lift is effected by raising the crutch until the pawl 19 engages the ratchet teeth 5. To lower the load the sequence of operations is reversed.
