Abstract
154,078. Powell, A. D. Dec. 10, 1919. Jacks. - Lifting- jacks, of the kind in which the raising is effected by mechanical means and the lowering by fluid-pressure, are provided with ratchet gearing, either with or without rack and pinion gearing, for raising the jack and l o c k i n g controlling- means for the lowering device. The plunger 5, Fig. 1, is formed with ratchet teeth 10 and is raised by the operation of a handle 14, the handle-socket 11 carrying a spring-pressed pawl 9. By slightly withdrawing the handle, the pawl is freed from a stop 17 which permits a cam 18 on the handle-socket to depress a plunger 19 which opens the non-return valve 21 and allows the oil to escape from under the plunger 5, which then descends.. In a modification, the pawl 30, Fig. 9, rotates a ratchet wheel 25 carrying a pinion gearing with rack teeth on the plunger 5. By. withdrawing the handle 14 from the upper socket 26 and inserting it into the lower socket 34, a cam 18 on the lower socket opens a slide valve 19 to release the oil. A separate non-return valve 21 may be provided for admitting the oil into the cylinder in either form of the invention, and the construction shown in Fig. 1 may be provided with ratchet wheel mechanism similar to that shown in Fig. 9.
