Abstract

266,978. Lake, A. E. July 9, 1926. Jacks. -In screw jacks of the kind in which a vertically reciprocating lever pivoted near the base of the jack operates the lifting screw through toothed gearing, the gearing is actuated by means of a shaft formed with a quick-pitch thread and rotated by a worm-wheel or nut. The hand lever 15 carries a spring-pressed double ended pawl 16 adapted to engage ratchet teeth 13A formed on a worm-wheel 13 which engages a quick-pitch thread 10 on a shaft 9 carrying at its upper end a pinion 8 which rotates the nut 5 engaging the lifting screw 2. In a modification the gear wheels are arranged in the base of the jack. The quick-pitch thread 10, Fig. 3, may be engaged by a nut 21 mounted on the lever 22, ratchet mechanism arranged in the pinion 8 being provided to permit lifting or lowering as required. The ratchet mechanism comprises a reversible pawl 24, Fig. 4, pivotally mounted on a pawl carrier 25 fixed to the shaft 9, the pawl engaging internal teeth 8A on the wheel 8. The reversing ratchet mechanism may be fitted to the nut. The shaft 9, Fig. 8, may be horizontally arranged and is then geared to the lifting screw by bevel gearing 33.
