Abstract
337,168. Smith, A. B., and Smith, C. R. Oct. 9, 1929. Jacks.-Ratchet gearing for operating mechanism such as a lifting-jack of the kind in which the lifting pillar is operated by screw-and-nut mechanism actuated by a hand-lever through ratchet mechanism, comprises a pair of opposed spring-pressed pawls mounted on a disc and engagable with a ratchet wheel, a handle with a projection being inserted between the pawls to disengage either pawl. As applied to a screw jack, a disc k carries a pair of spring-pressed pawls o normally engaging ratchet teeth n on a bevel wheel m which drives the usual bevel wheel nut b on the lifting pillar c. A handle s carrying a pin u can be inserted into a socket r on the disc and is partially rotated to disengage either pawl. By oscillating the handle the ratchet is driven and the jack raised. When the handle is removed and both pawls are engaged, a quick lift is obtained by rotating the disc k by hand. In a modification the handle is arranged for horizontal movement and the disc has a sleeve extension mounted on the jack casing.
