Abstract

152,810. Percival, S., (Duff Manufacturing Co.). Aug. 6, 1919. Jacks.-In jacks of the kind having a double rack bar engaged at opposite sides by pinions, the shafts 14 on which the pinions are mounted carry buttress gears 18 which are engaged by a double conical spiral pinion 23. The shaft 21 carrying the pinion 23 also carries a rocker 40 formed with a socket for the handle 43. A ratchet-wheel 41 with symmetrical teeth is fixed between the cheeks of the rocker and is engaged by a double reversible pawl 44, Fig. 6, which is shifted from one operative position to the other by an off-set projection 47 on the end of the handle. The pawl is held in either position by the engagement of a spring 51 with one of the notches 49. The rack bar 4 is secured to a head 25 from which depends a lifting bar 31 provided with notches 32. The load-engaging member 33 has lugs 34 embracing the channelled sides of the bar, and can be moved so that its extremity 35 engages any one of the notches. Engagement is maintained by a counterweight 36.
