Abstract

Jacks.-In a jack of the pawl-and-ratchet type, the lifting-pawl 12 is connected to the retaining-pawl 15 by a link 18 which is acted on by a leaf spring 19. A rotatable cam 20 maintains the spring either in position to effect the engagement of the pawl and ratchet or to keep the pawl out of action. In the former position the lifting- pillar can be raised, and in the latter position, Fig. 3, lowered. The pawl 12 is guided into engagement with the ratchet by a set screw 24 which can also be used for locking the pawl in engagement with the ratchet.
