Abstract
125,290. King, C. F. L. July 10. 1918. Jacks of the pawl-and-ratchet type. The pawls are acted upon, and alternately thrown out of engagement by trip members carried by a rocker which can be held in either an operative position for lowering, or in an inoperative position for lifting. The pawls 5, 6 are pivoted to the handle 1 on opposite sides of its fulcrum 2 and are kept in engagement with the rack 7 on the lifting pillar 8 by springs 9, 10. The trip levers 13, 14 are pivoted to a rocker plate 15 which is mounted in the casing 3 by a pivot 16. The levers are forced against stops 19, 20 on the rocker by springs 17, 18. The rocker is held in position for lowering, Fig. 4, by the engagement of the nose 22 of the detent 21 with the tooth 23. In the lifting position, Fig. 1. the tooth 23 rests on the nose of the detent. The levers act on pins 11, 12 on the pawls. In a single-acting jack having a retaining pawl 24, Fig. 6, for holding the load when the lifting pawl is withdrawn, a double-armed leaf or wire spring 25 is placed between the pawls and is mounted on the rocker 15 carrying a trip lever 14. The pawls have pins 11, 12 which co-act with the arms of the spring 25.
