[Class 136 (i).] In a device for carrying a spare wheel on a motor vehicle, the laterally displaceable spare - wheel holder is carried by links e, el on a frame f on the vehicle and is raised and lowered by rotating a pulley, drum, or the like i mounted on the holder c and engaging a cable or chain h. In the construction shown the hub b for receiving the spare wheel a is connected through a reduction gear to the pulley i and the cable h passes over a pulley j on the frame f and is fixed to the pulley i so that rotation of the wheel a raises or lowers the support, a ratchet wheel i3 and a pawl i<4> preventing the wheel from running-back whilst it is being raised. The pulley i may be rotated, by manually rotating the wheel a, by a detachable crank handle, or by an electric motor M through pinions n, n<1>, n<2>; in the latter case the motor may be disconnected by sliding the pinion n on its spindle. A handle k facilitates lifting the wheel when the operation is done manually. Weighted lever catches for retaining the wheel in the raised position and adapters for the hub b in order that it may carry any wheel may be provided. Two devices may be provided on opposite sides of a vehicle and in this case both devices are controlled by a single cable h, one hub being fixed if desired. The pulley i may be replaced by a winch and a worm or epicyclic gear may replace the pinions n, n<1>, n<2>.
