Abstract
338,670. Kennedy, D. S., and Kempe, I. T. Oct. 9, 1929. Mounting spare wheels on vehicles.-A device for carrying a heavy spare wheel on a motor vehicle comprises a frame, fitted with a support for the spare wheel, and pivoted at its lower end to the chassis so that it can be swung out laterally from the vehicle to lower the wheel, under the control of a cable or chain engaging a winch, drum, or pulley on the spare wheel support. The construction shown comprises two frames 4, 4' pivoted at 3, 3<1> to a, framework 13, 14, the wheels 8 being held flat against the frames by means of dummy hubs or supports. The wheel support on the frame 4 is revoluble and comprises a drum or winch 9 provided with a cable 10, which passes around pulleys 20, 21 on the frames 4, 4<1> respectively and is secured at 11 to the frame 4. On releasing one of the pivoted frames, for example the frame 4<1>, by raising a pivoted gravity latch 19<1>, the frame may be pulled outwards by means, of a handle 12, and then lowered, as shown in dotted lines, under the control of the winch 9, which is actuated by manual rotation of the wheel 8 on the frame 4. The wheels normally rest against the framework 14, or in concave supports carried thereby. The cable 10 may be anchored to the chassis, and separate winches &c. may be employed for the two wheels. The revoluble wheel support may be connected to the winch &c. through spur &c. reduction gear. The pivot for the carrier frame may be mounted in pivoted brackets in such a way that it can be slewed round in a horizontal plane, so as to cause the wheel when lowered to be directed towards the front or rear of the vehicle.
