Abstract
800,075. Loading and unloading vehicles. MARKET TRANSPORT, Ltd., and TAPP, R. P. J. Nov. 22, 1956 [Nov. 22, 1955], No. 33472/55. Class 78 (4). A loading apparatus for vehicles comprises a cantilever 16, Fig. 1, of inverted U-shape, carrying slings 34 to support the load 35, and mounted on two trolleys 12 movable on rails 11 on either side of the vehicle. The cantilever is rotated on pivots 21 by hydraulic rams 17 or alternatively by hand through suitable worm gearing, and the trolleys are traversed by endless ropes 27. passing several times round winches 23 which may be rotated by hand, or electrically or hydraulically. In alternative arrangements the trolleys may be joined by an arch large enough to allow the passage of the cantilever 16; the trolleys and rails may be mounted beneath the platform with only the supports 15 for the cantilever above it; and the trolleys may be traversed by lead screws, or hydraulic rams, or by endless chains passing over sprockets mounted on cross-shafts at either end of the run, one of the shafts being driven electrically or hydraulically. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, the endless chain 38 passes over an arcuate toothed rack 46 fixed to the cantilever 16 and under sprockets 47 which may be clutched or unclutched on shafts 48 fixed to the trolley by a lever 52 which also applies brakes to the trolley wheels 13 when the sprockets 47 are unlocked. Thus the chain 38 may be used to traverse the trolley or to rotate the cantilever 16. The trolleys may also be driven by electric or hydraulic motors mounted on them, either driving the trolley wheels or by means of racks and pinions, which may consist of fixed chains on the vehicle and sprockets on the trolleys. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, only one trolley is used and the cantilever loads from the side of the vehicle. In either embodiment a rope and load hook may be used in place of the slings 34 of Fig. 1.
