Abstract

411,926. Winches; slings; engaging, lifting, and lowering loads. KNOWLER, H., Twynham, Maresfield Road, and SAUNDERS-ROE, Ltd., both in East Cowes, Isle of Wight. March 12, 1929, No. 8087. [Classes 78 (ii), 78 (iv), and 78 (v).] A bomb c is lifted up to the bomb rack of an aircraft or lowered by means of one or two winches A, B detachably connected to the bomb rack. Each winch comprises a drum 1 from which two cables 7, 8 are paid out over pulleys 5, 6, one on each side of the rail D of the bomb rack. The cables 7, 8 are connected to a leather strap 10 by means of a swivel 15, a quick release mechanism 16, and a turn buckle 17, which latter enables the bomb c to be rotated slightly to bring its hook c<1> in line with the slip mechanism. The strap 10 is made in two parts connected by an adjustable buckle 17 ; and when two winches are used, the two straps are connected by a pair of ties 18, one on each side of the bomb. The drum 1 and the pulleys 5, 6 are carried by a frame 2 provided with a handle 19 and adapted to be positioned over the rail D ; and a pair of forks 11 pivoted on the frame are swung down to embrace the rail to prevent lateral displacement of the frame. The drum 1 is driven through epicyclic gearing and a pulley 20 by means of an endless chain 21.
