Abstract

548,642. Capstans. HEAD, R. F., and HOSKINS ESTATE CO. Pty., Ltd. Oct. 29, 1941, No. 13937. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1940. [Class 78 (v)] A capstan &c. has a vertical shaft 1 passing through a deck journal 26 and connected by an adjustable coupling 27 to a power shaft 30. Loose on the upper end of shaft 1 are a drum 4 and an interchangeable gipsy wheel 3 which latter rests on a washer 2 fixed on the shaft 1. Dowel pins 5 hold the drum and gipsy wheel non-rotatably together. A two - way ratchet wheel 8 fixed on the shaft 1 is engaged by a spring pressed pawl 10 carried by the drum 4. The pawl 10 is retractable by a knob 15 and can be turned and locked to drive in either direction, or can be withdrawn and held clear of the wheel 8. The top of the shaft 1 is screw-threaded to receive a brake block 23 which can be turned by capstan bars to bear on the upper flat space of the drum 4. When intended for manual operation only the coupling 27 is dispensed with. and a nut screwing on the bottom end of the shaft 1 holds this always rigid.
