Abstract

165,484. Sandford, W. H. Jan. 6, 1920. Surface condensers.-In a surface condenser for marine use, in which a vacuum can be produced on the sea-water side of the tubes 4 greater than that on the steam side, so as to prevent leakage of sea-water into the tubes, the sea-water is drawn by a pump 1 on the exhaust side through an adjustable throttle valve 6 on the inlet side. An air chamber 7 is connected to the sea-water header 2 to preserve a constant vacuum. An automatically-acting by-pass valve may be fitted to the inlet pipe so as to admit additional sea-water if the vacuum becomes too low. This valve may be operated by a piston connected with the steam space of the condenser so as to maintain a constant difference of pressure between the steam and sea-water sides of the tubes.
