Abstract

639,870. Vacuum pumps. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and BRACKENBURY, A. G. Sept. 12, 1947, No. 25101. [Class 8(i)] In an exhauster for air or other gases comprising one or more cylinders 2, 3, 4 each containing a reciprocating piston 5, 6, 7 communicating on one side with the interior of a crankcase 12 through which the piston driving crankshaft 9 extends, the crankc a s e is closed and maintained at an internal pressure substantially below atmospheric pressure by a port 21 located so as to establish communic a t i o n between two sides of a piston 7 at substantially the end of the suction stroke. The crankshaft is mounted in bearings 10, 11 and leakage of atmospheric air into the crankcase is prevented by means of a pair of sealing rings 17, 18 which engage the chankshaft where it extends through the crankcase, the space 19 between the rings being supplied with oil at a greater pressure than atmospheric air.
