714,508. Stuffing-box substitutes. JONES, G. O. Aug. 21, 1952 [Aug. 21, 1951], No. 19666/51. Class 122(5) [Also in Gioup XXVIII] A gas compressor has the cylinder space on the outside of the piston 1 enclosed by a non-metallic flexible diaphragm 8 secured to the piston rod 2 and means are provided for maintaining the pressure on opposite sides of the diaphragm substantially equal. The upper side of the diaphragm is connected through a pipe 20 with the supply of gas to be compressed which is maintained at substantially atmospheric pressure whilst the underside of the diaphragm is open to atmosphere through a port 22. The diaphragm is preferably made of rubber and to avoid chemical attack a vegetable oil such as castor oil is used for lubricating, the working parts in the crank case. The piston rod may carry a number of diaphragms mounted in series with the intervening space or spaces between the diaphragms filled with a buffer gas. Means may be provided for detecting any leakages of this buffer gas so as to indicate failure of a diaphragm.
