Abstract

615,274. Pistons. OSBORNE, W. July 26, 1946, No. 22368. [Class 122 (i)] A piston for an internal combustion engine, is provided with an oil-holding recess 9, in one or both of its two thrust sides, for equalizing piston-ring wear, keeping the piston running straight and maintaining the motor at a cool temperature. The recess is deeper and wider at the end towards the skirt and its upper and lower edges are undercut to form lips. An oil elevator groove 15 serves to lift the oil upwardly and to distribute it evenly over the cylinder surface whilst a groove 20 is provided in the piston head for the collection of carbon which might otherwise collect behind the piston rings 27. Compression ring grooves 23 are in communication with the interior of the piston and the crank-case by vacuum relief holes 26 which allow oil to drain to the crank-case when the engine is not in operation.
