700,702. Engine cylinders; compressed air engines. CLIMAX ROCK DRILL & ENGINEERING WORKS, Ltd. Feb. 25, 1952 [March 14, 1951], No. 6201/51. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (3) A cylinder cover 2 of an air motor is secured to the cylinder 1 by bolts 13 engaging threaded holes 12 in a retaining ring 10 located in the cylinder and abutting against a split ring 9 housed in a groove 6 in the cyinder wall ; the cover 3 at the other end of the cylinder is similarly secured. To enable the rings 9 to be gripped by pliers and contracted for insertion in the cylinder, holes are provided at each side of the gap in the rings. To facilitate insertion of the piston rings 19 in the cylinder the sides 8 of the grooves remote from the covers 2. 3 are chamfered. During normal operation of the motor air is supplied to, and exhausted from, each end of the cylinder through cavities 23 in the cylinder covers 2, 3 but towards each end of the piston stroke one of a pair of bosses 24 on each side of the piston 1 enters the cavity 23 and co-operateswith a sealing ring 24A in a groove 25 in the cavity to prevent exhaust therethrough which then takes place through a throttle valve controlled subsidiary passage in the cylinder cover thereby to cushion the piston. On the return stroke air flows through a further passage in the cylinder cover controlled by a non-return valve or, alternatively, the sealing ring 24A may be of the flexible lip type permitting flow of air from but not into the cavity 23.
