Abstract

878,138. Piston packing. COOPER-BESSEMER CORPORATION. March 18, 1960 [Nov. 16, 1959], No. 9618/60. Class 122 (1). In a two-stroke internal combustion engine, at least the top piston ring 18 is prevented from rotating in its groove 21 by locating means, for example a pin 22, secured to the piston 11 and engaging recesses 20 formed in the inner periphery of the ring at the joint, the locating means being disposed at the side of the piston which, in operation, overruns the intake ports 12. Clearance is provided between the walls of the recesses 20 and the pin 22 which is fitted in a hole 23 in the piston and, preferably, is formed from spirally-wound metal strip. The ring 18 may have a wear insert 19 in its outer periphery and when it is fully expanded against the cylinder wall occupies not less than 78% of the cross-sectional area of the groove 21.
