Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A double acting ram unit comprises a pressurizable expanding seal 8 mounted in the body of a piston with an annular face 2a and a full face 2b. A piston rod 3 includes a pressure supply duct 1 communicating with the interior of the seal 8 and a by-pass duct 9 with a non- return valve 10 communicating with the interior of the seal 8 and with the chamber on the side of the annular face 2a. When pressure is applied to the annular face 2a through a pipe (not shown) the valve 10 is closed and isolates the interior of the seal 8 so that pressure can be transmitted through the clearance between the seal 8 and the inside of the cylinder, the pressures in the chambers on both sides of the piston becoming the same with consequent extension of the ram. Admission of pressure through the duct 1 seals the seal 8 against the inside of the cylinder insolating the chamber of the full face 2b from the chamber of the annular face 2a so that the ram is retracted, pressure medium trapped in the full face piston chamber escaping through an exhaust (not shown).
