Abstract

Piston compressor stage has a labyrinth seal and sealing elements(s) fitted to the piston; the piston has a recess in the section between the labyrinth seal and sealing element, forming with the wall of the cylinder a chamber which enables the compressed gas to expand after flowing over through the labyrinth seal, so that the pressure on the sealing element is diminished. Preferably the recess on the piston is over the whole length of its periphery. Channels in the body of the piston are connected to the recess. The working life of the seals is increased.
