Abstract

192,867. Thompson, E. G. Dec. 8, 1921. Packing, metallic; packing, non-metallic.- A tube of expansible non- metallic material, closed at one end and fitted with a valve at the other end, is wound spirally in a stuffing-box and inflated by fluid pressure. An expansible spiral tube 5 is closed at one end and fitted at the other end with a connection 6 with a check or stop valve. The tube may act as the packing, or may compress antifriction or other packing rings 7. The connection 6 may pass through the gland 3, or through the side of the stuffing-box. The fluid admitted to the packing may be compressed air or steam or other fluid from the cylinder, valve chest or boiler.
