Safety-valves.-A safety valve of the kind provided with a piston or the like 3 subject to the pressure in the waste steam space 8 to give an extra lift has the outlet 7 from the waste steam space so proportioned that the pressure in the waste steam space is approximately 50 per cent of the inlet pressure and the pressure in the waste pipe 9 approximately 50 per cent of the pressure in the waste steam space. In a modification to avoid a comparatively high pressure being maintained in the waste pipe, the piston is arranged to work in an auxiliary chamber having an outlet proportioned similarly to the outlet. This outlet may be entirely provided by clearance around the piston or a separate port may be formed in the casing.
