Abstract
253,710. Reid, W. June 4, 1925. Compound engines. - A uniflow, reciprocating, steam engine using highly superheated, high-pressure steam has a slight annular clearance between the piston and piston wall. The ends of the cylinder 1 are separated by a series of packing-rings 7 fitted in the cylinder walls between the exhaust valves 5 within which rings the piston works steam tight. The inner parts 8 of the cylinder bores near the exhaust valves are flared; the packing is exposed to steam at exhaust temperature and pressure. The inner end of the cylinder is provided with a sleeve 12 which enters between the piston-rod and piston and may contain packing engaging the piston. The length of the piston is equal to the stroke and breadth of the packing. The exhaust valves 5 open at 90 per cent for release and close at half-stroke for compression, the exhaust fluid passes to another cylinder to be used expansively. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, steam is first supplied to space 20 and exhausts to the space controlled by valve 21, it then passes to the top of cylinder 1<a>, and finally exhaust from the chamber controlled by valve 24.
