Abstract

334,617. Ricardo, H. R. June 11, 1929. Pistons; packing.-Accumulation of carbon &c. behind a packing-ring L in an engine, pump or compressor, is prevented by means of a segmental or split ring N in the space behind the ring L, the ring N being of less width than the packing-ring groove and free to move axially therein under the influence of the gases entering the groove and, in the case of reciprocating parts, under the influence also of inertia. The invention is applicable to pistons, but is shown applied to the cylinder head H of a sleeve-valve engine, the ring L packing the interior of the sleeve-valve J. The invention is applicable also to a cylinder head H, which is movable axially to adjust the compression, or to act as a valve.
