Abstract

Channels and reservoirs in stuffing- boxes.-In a stuffing-box, the packing is in halves separated by an annular space which is filled with lubricant maintained under pressure by means of one or more spring- pressed pistons. The annular space 14 communicates with four chambers in the stuffing box, each fitted with a piston 11 acted on by a spring 10. The lubricant is injected through a passage closed by a screw 8 by means of which the lubricant is put under pressure. The passage may be provided with a non-return valve 13. In a modification, an annular space 14 is connected by pipes with two chambers separate from the stuffing-box, one containing a spring-pressed piston and the other closed by a screw. The spring-pressed piston may carry a graduated rod, which projects from the piston chamber and indicates the pressure of the lubricant.
