763,718. Stuffing-boxes. MASCHINENFABRIK BURCKHARDT AKT.-GES. Jan. 31, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1954], No. 2853/55. Class 122(5). In a packing arrangement for the piston rod 3 of a compressor comprising a number of packing rings 4, at least some of the intervals between successive rings are connected, by connections adapted to be closed as required, such as by valves 7, 8 and 9, to a space of low pressure, such as the suction pipe of the compressor. A stuffing-box 5 is provided below the last packing ring 4 and the space between it and the last ring is also connected to the suction pipe via a pipe 6. By use of the valves 7, 8 and 9 the rings 4, which consist of a number of metal elements, 'can be used, in succession, to separately seal the rod. Thus, when all the valves are open, the total pressure drop occurs across the upper ring 4 which acts to seal the rod. When the upper ring is worn the second ring 4 may be brought into operation by closing valve 7. Similarly, the third and fourth rings respectively may be subsequently brought into operation, as desired, by closing valve 8 and then valve 9. Manometers 10 indicate which packing ring is in use and may be arranged to indicate an alarm when excessive loss occurs and transfer to another packing ring is desirable.
