Abstract
814,830. Piston packing. GRATZMULLER, J. L. Aug. 7, 1956 [Aug. 10, 1955], No. 24137/56. Class 122 (1). Piston sealing means, particularly for the free piston 2 of an oleo-pneumatic accumulator, comprises packing of deformable material which is axially compressed between a spring-loaded metal abutment ring 5 and a radial shoulder 6 on the piston and comprises at least two axially superposed portions of differing hardness, the softer or softest portion being separated from the shoulder 6 by a harder portion. The packing may be in the form of a single ring 3, Fig. 1, of axially variable hardness, the portion adjacent the shoulder 6 being harder than that adjacent the ring 5 or the central portion being softer than the two end portions. In a modification, the ring 3 is replaced by two axially superposed rings of differing hardnesses, that adjacent the shoulder 6 being the harder. In the further modification shown in Fig. 3, the ring d is harder than the rings b which are harder than the ring a and ring e is a metal ring which is a sliding fit in the cylinder 1 and acts as a guide ring.
