Class 108(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] Damping of a thrust piston 60 which is subjected to a sudden controlled acceleration during the initial position of its stroke is effected by abturating by means of a conical sleeve 76 surrounding and secured to the piston rod 25 on aperture 78 in a transverse plate 75 in that position 21 of cylinder, through which the rod 25 passes and thereby restricting flow of oil 77 through the aperture 78 as the piston nears the end of its stroke. The piston 60 in its retracted position is sealed by a ring 65 against a second transverse plate 45 having an aperture 28 through which projects a conical extension 61 of the piston and on transmitting pressure from a pneumatic piston 62 through oil 63 in cylinder space 22a sufficient to break the seal 65 and thus allow access of pressure to the whole of the piston, the latter is given a quick acceleration until the damping member 76 assisted by a second damping element 67 take effect. The degree of acceleration is determined by the contour of the projection 61, various forms of which are described.
