909,764. Hydraulic apparatus. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. Aug.25, 1961 [Sept. 5, 1960], No. 30593/60. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] A fluid-pressure operated motor which may be used for effecting steering of an aircraft nosewheel comprises a first cylinder 12, a second cylinder 18 having at least a part reciprocable in the first cylinder, a piston 20 reciprocable in the second cylinder and having a rod 21 passing through an end wall 15 of the first cylinder, and means 30, 33, 35 for supplying fluid underpressure to chambers 29, 31, 34 formed by the piston and cylinders. The piston rod 21 may be provided with means 27 for connection to the aircraft nosewheel and has a bore 30 which leads to the chamber 29 formed by the piston 20 in the second cylinder 18 and is connected to a passage 35 in a spigot 28 for mounting the motor on a fixed member, the passage 35 also leading to the chamber 34 formed by a piston 17 on the second cylinder and an end wall 13 of the first cylinder. A second passage 33 in the spigot leads to the chamber 31 formed by the end wall 15, the piston 20, and the first and second cylinders 12, 18. The second cylinder has a stop ring 22 which limits the movement of the piston 20 to the left. In operation, when fluid pressure is supplied by a valve to both passages 33, 35 and hence to all three chambers, the second cylinder moves to the right until the piston 17 abuts the end wall 13 and the piston 20 moves to the left and abuts the stop ring 22 so that the connection 27 is then in a central position corresponding to a straight ahead steering position of the nosewheel. When the passage 33 connected to chambers 29 and 34 is connected to exhaust, the pressure in chamber 31 moves the piston 20 and connection 27 to the right, and when chamber 31 is connected to exhaust, the cylinder 18 moves until the piston 17 abuts the end wall 15 to move the connection to the left. In an alternative embodiment, the second cylinder is housed completely within the first.
