708,582. Hydraulic machines. SOC D'INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES ET MECHANIQUES S.I.A.M. April 10, 1952 [April 14, 1951], No. 9301/52. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a fluid operated piston and cylinder jack a supplementary fluid pressure operated piston is provided in a supplementary chamber and connected to the main piston through a lost motion device to oppose and reduce the effort of the main piston at a predetermined position of the stroke. A piston 2 having a hollow rod 4 is slidable in a cylinder 1 having a smaller co-axial cylinder 13 with a piston 12 slidable therein and having a rod 14 slidable in a bore 16 in the piston 2, and an enlarged head 15. The jack expands at full power until the piston 2 engages the head 15 after which the piston 12 opposes the piston 2 and the stroke is completed at reduced power. In a modification the small piston is fitted in a cylinder at the rod end of the jack and power is reduced towards the end of the inward stroke of the jack.
