593,112. Testing physical qualities of materials. AVERY, Ltd., W. & T., and HINDE, P. B. July S, 19405, No. 14479. [Class 106 (ii)] A hydraulic testing machine has recoil alleviation means associated with a doubleacting cylinder c whereby, upon fracture of the specimen or an undue increase in the hydraulic pressure, a gaseous medium is compressed in a recoil cylinder e and, when the pressure in the hydraulic system reaches a predetermined maximum, a relief valve f is operated. The ram of the double-acting cylinder is connected to the straining cross-head b which is moved by several straining cylinders a and the interior of the double-acting cylinder is in communication through a valve c<1> with the recoil cylinder e in which a gaseous medium is maintained under a pre-determined pressure by free piston e<1>. Under normal conditions, oil may pass from the double-acting cylinder through a small orifice c<3> but, upon fracture of the specimen, oil enters the recoil cylinder and compresses the gas until the spring-loaded relief valve f operates, after which the recoil cylinder slowly recovers its initial position: The double-acting cylinder may also be used for setting purposes.
