Abstract
733,447. Hydraulic rams. KEELAVITE CO., Ltd. Jan. 25, 1954 [Jan. 14, 1953], No. 1114/53. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a hydraulic ram which includes a ram cylinder with a double-acting piston and a piston rod, the compression forces in the piston rod during the working strokes of the ram are eliminated or reduced. A ram piston B reciprocates within a cylinder A and is connected to a hollow tubular rod C. During a working stroke liquid is admitted to a chamber A2 of the ram cylinder A, the liquid in an annular chamber A<SP>3</SP> being compressed until its pressure is sufficient to open a pressure-reducing valve K, whereupon the liquid displaced from the chamber A3 can flow into the chamber A2. The pressures in chambers A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP> and the areas of the relevant surfaces of the piston and rod are such that the rod is maintained in tension. The pressure at which the valve K opens can be adjusted by means of a member K<SP>2</SP>. To retract the rod, liquid is supplied to chamber A<SP>3</SP> through a lightly loaded non-return valve J and chamber A<SP>2</SP> is open to exhaust.
