Abstract

755,078. Hydraulic jacks. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Aug. 31, 1954, No. 25276/54. Class 69 (2). A jack for steering an aircraft nosewheel is centred by an annular piston 26 sliding in an extension 5 of the main cylinder 1, the extension being of larger diameter than that of the main cylinder. The jack piston 10 is moved to the left by liquid supplied through a bore 17, and is moved to the right by liquid supplied through a bore 15. Liquid is supplied to the cylinder 5 through a bore 32. In one embodiment, in which the cylinder 1 has a fixed end wall 8, the jack is centred by the admission of liquid to chambers B and C, whereupon the piston 10 and piston rod 13 will move to the left until a stop 29 on the rod 13 engages the piston 26 which is held by the liquid pressure against an end flange 25 of the cylinder 5. Liquid pressure on the larger area of the piston 26 ensures that the piston 26 will retain the piston 10 in its central position. In a second embodiment, in which the end wall 8 is movable, the piston 10 is centralized by supplying only the chamber C with liquid and connecting chambers A and B to exhaust. The wall 8 will thereupon be moved into engagement with the piston 10 and the piston 26 will engage the flange 25 of the cylinder 5. The stop 29 will again abut the piston 26 and centralize the piston 10.
