Abstract

573,033. Hydraulic machines. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and BECK, G. Oct. 8, 1943, No. 16546. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] In a lifting jack of the kind in which a locking device for the plunger is disengaged by fluid pressure, the lock comprises one or more balls, rollers or loose segments mounted in the barrel which are forced inwards to engage a shoulder on the plunger and locked in this position by endwise movement of a sleeve. The balls 8 are positioned in holes in a cage 9 secured to one end of the barrel 1. A sleeve 10 is slidably mounted between the cage and barrel and is provided with an annular recess 11 which, when brought into register with the balls, permits their movement outwards from the shoulder 5c on the plunger 5 to release the latter. The cage has an annular recess 13 and a piston face 14, and is loaded by a spring 15. When pressure fluid is admitted through the connection 12, the cage moves upwards and, as soon as the balls enter the recess 11, the plunger moves upwards if the space below the piston 6 is in communication with a source of pressure fluid through the connection 4. If this communication is closed, the fluid which has been admitted through the connection 12, and has passed through slots 16 in the sleeve 10 and slots 18 in the gland-locating ring 17. to the space above the piston 6, causes the retraction of the plunger.
